What are the main roles of the Police in the criminal justice system
- Enforcing law
-Secure and collect evidence - Make arrests
- Issue cautions
- Send files to the cps
- Issue penalty notices
What relationships do the police have with other agencies ?
The courts: Provides protection for witnesses, holds defendants in cells and transport them to and from court.
The CPS: providing evidence from intial prosecution from the offenders.
HM prison and probation services: Police arrest those which have breached their probation accords. As a result to Sarahs law police cooperate with those that are sex offenders in areas
Voluntary organsiations: Refers victims of a crime and witnesses to Victim support or the Witness service
What is the main role of the CPS
- Advice police in their investigation to what evidence will help build the case
- Its decisons are based on applying ther full code test to the case
- It prepares and presents the prosecution case in court
What relationships does the CPS have with other agencies
The Police: Advising on what evidence is good for the building of the case.
The courts: Preparing and presenting the case to the courts.
What is the main role of the HM Courts
- Listen to defendants pleas
- Crown court will deal with serious offences
- Evidence will be both testimonial or physical
- Offenders can appeal their convictions or sentences
- Must consider the relevant statue setencing guidelines
- Magisstrates deal with less serious offences
