Perpetrator Characteristics
- Consider their own needs more important than the needs of others
- Poor social skills
- Men who abuse believe in male supremacy
- Pathological JEALOUSY (continuously jealous)
- Controls the family finances
- Likely to abuse alcohol and/or drugs
- Likely to have experienced violence as a child.
Common signs of neglect:
- Delayed growth and development
- Poor cleanliness and hygiene
- Inadequate clothing and basic supplies
- Hoarding or stealing FOOD
- Low record of school attendance
- Basic medical and DENTAL needs are not met
Common signs of physical abuse:
- Delays in seeking care for injuries
- Conflicting or CHANGING stories regarding the injuries
- Injuries not typical for a given group (ex. femur fracture of a two month old)
- Numerous bruises or injuries in various stages of healing
- Bruising of unusual ares (ex. abdomen, back, butt) however, bruises on knees or shins are expected findings in kids
- Bruises or injuries that resemble specific objects (ex. cig tips, belt buckles, looped patterns (belt))
- Burns that resemble forced immersion into scalding water (Ex. “glove” or “stocking” burns)
Common signs of sexual abuse:
- Redness, bruising, or tearing in the genitalia area
- Sexual behavior or knowledge that is inappropriate for the child’s age
- Pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections
