Why are aptitude test a weak measure of abilities?
Because it does not measure all aptitudes that are found in the world of work, i.e.
- Helping
- Interpersonal/Intrapersonal
- Creative- musical
- Creative- literary
- Creative- artistic
- Teaching
- Persuasive
- Leadership
- Organizational
- Scientific
- Synthetic
AND stereotype threatStereotype threat has been shown to reduce the performance of individuals who belong to negatively stereotyped groups.[3] If negative stereotypes are present regarding a specific group, they are likely to become anxious about their performance which may hinder their ability to perform at their maximum level. For example, stereotype threat can lower the intellectual performance of African-Americans taking the SAT reasoning test used for college entrance in the United States, due to the stereotype that African-Americans are less intelligent than other groups
What are some tools to assess abilities?
- O*Net Ability Profiler
- Skills check list
Then counselor can discuss skills they have and skills they need to develop - Card sort- a. skills they are proficient, b. skills they are adequate competence, c. little or no skills
As a counselor what is something to keep in mind when using self-estimates of abilities? Male and female differences?
Maybe distorted due to inadequate or limited experience, response style, intentional self-promotion and cheating.
Women underestimate their abilities
Men overestimate their abilities
What are some advantages and disadvantages of using some available tools to assess abilities?
Advantages: free or low-cost, easy, quick, and less stressful
Disadvantages: lack of scientific rigor and inability to generate occupational and educational options.
