A9 Flashcards
What is the BW of a newborn foal?
10% of the mares BW
At which age is the foal weaned, and why not before?
at 6 months
Before 3 months the foal’s primary hydrolase enzyme is lactase, meaning that milk is all that can be digested efficiently
How much colostrum is consumed for the first 8hrs of life?
3L
how much milk can a mare produce?
12-18 kg/day
How much does the foal consume for the 1st weeks?
20-25% of its BW per day
How much does the foal consume after 5 weeks?
17-20% of the BW per day
What do we call it when the foal is introduced to solid food, but still suckles and when to we start this?=
Creep feeding. Hay and concentrates are given in addition to milk
It is started at 2-3 weeks of age
What is the amount that is started in a foal?
1kg/100kg BW of concentrates
What is the amount of feed given to a 4month old foal?
Oats: 4L
Increased at a constant rate, so at 5 months=5L
Why is it not recommened to give too much alfalfa?
It is high in Ca and protein levles, which can lead to fast development causing DOD disorder
DOD=Developmental Orthopaedic Disease
Month of weaning, BW and how much feed would you give?
6 months of age
40-45% of the adults BW
Oats:5L
Hay: 2.5kg
What is the DM intake of a 3month old foal?
4kg
What is the DM intake of a 6month old foal?
5kg
What is the DM intake of a 12month old foal?
5kg
What is the DM intake of a 18month old foal?
6.5
What is the DM intake of a 24month old foal?
6.5
What is the F:C rato of a 3month old foal?
= Forage:Concentrate
20:80
What is the F:C rato of a 6month old foal?
30:70
What is the F:C rato of a 12month old foal?
50:50
What is the F:C rato of a 18month old foal?
70:30
What is the F:C rato of a 24month old foal?
70:30
What is the Ca:P ratio in foals?
1:1
What type of feed supplement would you give a foal?
- Vitamin E and selenium
- Tuarine
- Chromium
- Magnesium
- NaCl
- Copper, zinc
- Manganese
Why give Vitamin E and selenimum?
For antioxidants.
If deficient, they can cause white muscle disease which effects the respiratory, skeletal, and cardiac muscles of foals under 1 year of age. It can be prevented if the mare is supplemented in the 3rd trimester. The foal under 4 months of age can develop EDM (equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy)
Why give taurine
For nerve transmission, muscle function, calming action
Why give chromium?
supports a healthier glucose tolerance and normal blood sugar levels
Why give mangesium?
reduces the risk of laminitis when grazing on fresh grass, during the spring
Why give NaCl?
as salt lick in the summer due to increased mineral loss via sweating
Why give copper and zinc?
for keratin production for strong hooves and a healthy, shiny coat
Why give manganese?
for bone formation, given to prevent DOD (developmental orthopaedic disease
MAX:2-3 kg
