A8 Flashcards
What is flushing and why is it done?
Flushing is done to improve the implantation nd fertilization, to improve the BCS.
What is the gestation period of horses?
330-360 days, 11 months
What is the optimal BCS of horses?
6
Should be maintained through the year.
Overfed = decreased insulin sensitivity
How much DE would you feed the first 8 months of pregnancy?
70 MJ/day
Fotetus grows slowly during these months, maintenance is sufficient
How much DE would you feed during month 9 of pregnancy?
increase 10%
77 MJ/day
How much DE would you feed during month 10 of pregnancy?
increase 15%
88.5 MJ/day
How much DE would you feed during month 11 of pregnancy?
Increase 20%
106.3 MJ/day
How much g/day of CP would you give for the first 8 months?
735 g/day
How much g/day of CP would you give for during month 9?
810 g/day, meadow hay
How much g/day of CP would you give for during month 10?
930 g/day, meadow hay
How much g/day of CP would you give for during month 11?
more than 1000 g/day, alfalfa can be fed
How much feed intake would you give for the first 4 months?
10-12 kg forage
How much feed intake would you give for month 5-7?

1-2 kg concentrates
How much feed intake would you give for month 10-11?
8-10 kg forage
2-3 kg concentrates
Why do we supplement with mineral, how much and in which months?
For bone and cartilage development
Give 0.5-1 kg
For 0-8 months
when do we add calcium and phosphorus, and how much?
For the last 4 months.
Maintenance: 1.5x
Lactation 1.7x

9-11 kg DMI
what is the daily concentrate intake of a lactating mare?
6-7 kg
what is the daily water intake of lactating mare?
4-6 liters/kg DM
or
12-14 litres/100 kgBW
approx. 70L/day
How much milk is normally produced by a mare?
12-18 kg/day
Is cow or horse milk lightest and why?
Horse milk is lighter, because it contains less nutrients but more lactose = Need less energy for lacation
What is the energy requirement for lactation?
For the 1st month and the 5th month?
3.4 MJ/kg milk
1st month= 142 MJ/day
5th month = 125 MJ/day
When is the milk production peaked in horses?
In the second month
First 3months=3% of BW
Last 2-3 months=2% of BW
