Biomedical view of (ill) health
Health is the absence of physical disease
- aim of treatment us to return to original health, not to enhance
Biopsychosocial view of (ill) health
Health is a continuum, changing
- aims to enhance health
Factors:
- biology = genes
- psychology = stress
- social = family
Stress
An emotional response to a threat
Stressor
a threat that creates stress,
can be physical or psychological
The stress response
Physical:
- increased heart rate
- sweating
- nausea
Psychological:
- anger
- anxiety
The body produces a response based on your perceived ability to cope
Perceived ability to cope (PAC)
If you think you can cope = no stress
If you think you cant cope = stress
environmental demands > PAC = STRESS
environmental demands < PAC = NO STRESS
Perception of available resources
If you think you have good resources then you will have less stress
Internal resource = resilience
External resource = support, tools
Physiological addiction
(smoking + alcohol)
the need for a substance that affects your body physically
Behavioural addiction
(gambling + shopping)
needing to do a a particular activity that produces physical effects like a substance would

Physical + psychological dependence
- the behaviour dominates life
- crave and think about it
- cannot lead normal life
Tolerance
- requires increased dose top produce equal effects
- less of a buzz from same dose
Withdrawal
effects that occur when stopping substance/ activity
Physiological:
- headache, nausea, loss appetite
Behavioural:
- low mood, irritability
Relapse
reverting back to the addictive behaviour after giving it up
- it can happen after a long period of being sober
