A Walk in the Words Flashcards
Every day, after playing with my friends, I’d come home and draw stories that I made up.
A walk in the words
I would start a long sentence and then my mind began to wander.
A walk in the words
But long sentences? No way!
A walk in the words
And they were coming for me!
A walk in the words
ME EAT PICTURES!
A walk in the words
The first ones were friendly, with big pictures and only a few words.
A walk in the words
Drawing always came naturally to me.
A walk in the words
I drew all the time.
A walk in the words
I just did it, like breathing.
A walk in the words
It was like diving into my own world.
A walk in the words
I liked words, too - one at a time.
A walk in the words
When I was reading, I had to picture every single WORD.
A walk in the words
I was the slowest reader in my class.
A Walk in the Words
When everybody was turning to the next page, I was still on the first sentence.
A walk in the words
Nobody knew.
A walk in the words
But the books knew!
A walk in the words
So many words!
A walk in the words
So many pages!
A walk in the words
Books weren’t always scary.
A walk in the words
Howdy!
A walk in the words
But little by little, the pictures got smaller and the text got longer.
A walk in the words
You read!
A walk in the words
I could pick out the words I knew but the rest looked like squiggles.
A walk in the words
It was a rain of terror.
A walk in the words
My drawing pad was my safe place.
A walk in the words
A whole page of text looked like a wall - keeping me out.
A walk in the words
By now, everyone in my class was reading book after book, except me.
A walk in the words
What if they found out that I couldn’t keep up?
A walk in the words
I had to face it: I was alone and lost in a world of words.
A walk in the words
Everywhere I looked, there were - big words! strange words! scary words!
A walk in the words
One big word was stalking me - overwhelm.
A walk in the words
It described the feeling of too many words coming at me at the same time.
A walk in the words
It made me want to give up.
A walk in the words
But I loved stories too much to quit.
A walk in the words
I was good at picturing stuff.
A walk in the words
Maybe I could try picturing a way out.
A walk in the words
I grabbed overwhelm and broke off over so it just said whelm.
A walk in the words
It meant the same thing but more my size.
A walk in the words
Now I could whelm the words before they overwhelmed me.
A walk in the words
I’d just read at my own pace.
A walk in the words
I took time to look for the words I knew.
A walk in the words
There they were!
A walk in the words
Like stepping - stones leading me onward.
A walk in the words
I jumped over the words I didn’t know, and let the words I knew lead me into the story.
A walk in the words
After a while, I wasn’t thinking about reading.
A walk in the words
I just wanted to know what happened next.
A walk in the words
The was between my fear of reading and my curiosity was over.
A walk in the words
Curiosity won.
A walk in the words
Books weren’t so scary, once I got to know them.
A walk in the words
And now that I was beginning to like words, why rush past them?
A walk in the words
Read at your own speed
A walk in the words
I realized that just because I was slow at reading didn’t mean that I had to fear it.
A walk in the words
I also learned that many great people were slow readers.
A walk in the words
I honored them all…in my slow readers hall of fame.
A walk in the words
And I tore down the terrible wall of shame.
A walk in the words
Slow readers savor the story!
A walk in the words
I experimented with ways to tell me stories.
A walk in the words
I could still tell a story with pictures,
A walk in the words
Or I could tell it with words.
A walk in the words
The monster from Planet Mongo
A walk in the words
The monster cornered me.
A walk in the words
My gun jammed!
A walk in the words
I had to think fast or Earth was doomed!
A walk in the words
My favorite way was using both.
A walk in the words
The monster attacked the space station!
A walk in the words
People ran for their lives!
A walk in the words
He saw me!
A walk in the words
Yikes! My raygun jammed!
A walk in the words
I had to stop the monster before he reached Earth!
A walk in the words
I remembered how my horses got better the more I drew them.
A walk in the words
My writing would improve too, if I wrote everyday.
A walk in the words
A drawing could show what a horse looked like.
A walk in the words
But with words, I could bring them to life.
A walk in the words
Now they could breathe and snort and carry me on adventures.
A walk in the words
I read everyday, in search of new words for my stories.
A walk in the words
It was like finding new colors for my art, but now I was learning to paint with words.
A walk in the words
There were still times when I felt lost in a sea of words.
A walk in the words
My drawing pad was still in my safe place.
A walk in the words
Others found music, sports, math and science.
A walk in the words
Words had always scared me.
A walk in the words
But once I felt free to read at my own speed, they became my friends.
A walk in the words
I could unlock the magic of stories and even become a storyteller myself, turning that sea of words into an ocean of possibilities.
A walk in the words
Now all I have to do is enjoy the ride!
