A&P CH4 Flashcards
Def. squamous
flat structure
Def. cuboidal
cubic structure
Def. columnar
like a column - structure
Def. epithelial tissue
layers of cells, simple or stratified
Where is epithelial tissue located?
Covers internal and external surfaces
What connects epithelial tissue to underlying tissue?
Basement membrane (or basal layer)
Epithelial = vascular or avascular?
avascular
Functions of epithelial tissue? (4)
- Protection
- Sensory
- Permeability
- Produce secretions
2 types of secretions (and names)
Endocrine = secreted within the body through ductless glands Exocrine = secreted to outside of body through ducts
Where is basement membrane?
Between epidermis and dermis
Def. apocrine and where is it located?
gland that goes directly to surface of skin, armpit (sweat)
Primary function of merocrine glands?
To cool the skin
Sebaceous glands secrete what? Location? Function?
Secrete sebum (oily substance), located on scalp, functions: lubrication and protection, antibody protection
What is the erector pili?
Contracts and causes hair follicles to stand on end
3 type of connective tissue?
- Connective tissue proper (e.g. fat)
- Fluid connective tissue (e.g. blood)
- Supportive connective tissue (e.g. bone)
Functions of connective tissue? (3)
- Support/protection
- Transportation
- Defense
Def. connective tissue proper
underlies the skin, fatty tissue, and tendons/ligaments
Def. fibroblasts
produce and maintain connective tissue fibers and ground substance
Def. macrophages
“big eater” cells, engulf damaged cells or pathogens, and mobilize defenses
Fat cells also called?
Adipocytes
What are mast cells?
activate defensive capabilities, immune system
3 connective tissue proper fibers?
- collagen fibers
- elastic fibers
- reticular fibers
What is fluid connective tissue?
Blood and components of blood
Name 3 plasma proteins
- Albumin (pressure regulation)
- Globulins
- Fibrinogen (clotting)
