**A&P 2 Unit 27 (Lab) [Male Reproductive System] Flashcards
**Name the gamete produced by the testes
Sperm (Become better swimmers in the Epididymus)
**Describe the position of the testes in relation to the pelvic cavity, and the benefit of this location.
- Below the pelvic cavity in the scrotum
- Helps to keep the testes cooler than body temperature so that the sperm develop correctly
**State the endocrine function of the testes
Leydig cells produce Testosterone
**Briefly describe the role of testosterone in the male
- For spermatogenesis
- Change from a boy’s body to a man’s body (Secondary Sex Structures)
- Promotes larger muscle & bone mass
- Sex Drive
**Describe Spermatogenesis
The process in which spermatozoa are produced from male primordial germ cells by way of mitosisand meiosis.
**Spermatogenic Cells:
- Spermatogonium (2n) (stem cell)
- Primary Spermatocyte (2n)
- Secondary Spermatocyte (n)
- Early Spermatid (n)
- Late Spermatid (n)
- Sperm Cell or Spermatozoon (n)
**Decribe the pathway that sperm follow from the testes, through the duct system of the male.
- Semineferous tubules
- Straight tubules
- Rete testes
- Efferent ducts
- Vas deferens
- Ejaculatory duct
- Prostatis urethra
- Membranous urethra
- Spongy urethra
- External urethral orifice
**Semen
An organic fluid that may contain spermatozoa.
**Fluids Contributed to Semen
- Prostate Gland
- Seminal Vesicles
- Bulbourethral Glands
**Prostate Gland
Milky color, contains nurishment for sperm
**Seminal Vesicles (2)
Contains nurishment for sperm
**Bulbourethral Gland
Very alkaline, secretion is full of mucus for lubrication in male duct work
**Describe the role of the corpora cavernosa & corpus spongiosum in the penis
-
Corpora Cavernosa
- The pair of flacid flesh tissue that contains most of the blood in the penis during penile erection. These tissues lie along the penis shaft, from the pubic bones to the head of the penis, where they join.
-
Corpus Spongiosum
- The mass of spongy tissue that surrounds the male urethra within the penis.
**The 3 main parts of sperm
- Head
- Mid Piece
- Tail
**Head of Sperm
- Contains the father’s DNA
- Acrosome: contains enzymes to penetrate oocyte
