**A&P 2 Unit 27 (Lab) [Female Reproductive System and Meiosis] Flashcards
Describe the position of the ovaries in the pelvic cavity, & how the ovaries are held in place.
- Ovaries are lateral to the uterus.
- Ovaries are held in place by ligaments.
Name the gamete & hormones that are produced in the ovaries.
-
Gamete
- Oocytes
-
Hormones
- Estrogens
- Progesterone
Oocytes
The female gametocyte or germ cellinvolved in reproduction.
Follicles
- Surrounds oocytes
- Source of female sex hormones
Describe the location, structure, & functions of the uterine (Fallopian) tubes.
-
Location
- Bilaterally at the superior portion of the uterine cavity
-
Structure
- Tube
-
Functions
- Transport the fertilized egg to the uterus for implantation.
Describe the location of the uterus, & name the ligaments holding it in place.
- Medial organ in pelvic cavity
-
Ligaments
- Broad Ligament (Largest)
- Round Ligament (Anterior)
Describe the 3 anatomical regions of the uterus.
- Fundus
- Body
- Cervix
3 layers of the uterine wall
- Endometrium
- Myometrium
- Perimetrium
Endometrium
Part of the endometrium is shed each month
Myometrium
Smooth muscle
Perimetrium
Visceral paritoneum
Describe the loaction, structure, & functions of the vagina.
-
Location
- In the pelvic body cavity posterior to the urinary bladder and anterior to the rectum.
-
Structure
- Measuring around 3 inches in length and less than an inch in diameter, the vagina stretches to become several inches longer and many inches wider during sexual intercourse and childbirth.
-
Functions
- The vagina receives the penis during sexual intercourse and also serves as a conduit for menstrual flow from the uterus. During childbirth, the baby passes through the vagina (birth canal).
Vulva
The female external genitals.
Vulva (Structures & Functions)
-
Structures
- The labia majora, mons pubis, labia minora, clitoris, bulb of vestibule, vulval vestibule, greater and lesser vestibular glands, and the opening of the vagina (introitus).
-
Functions
- It protects women’s sexual organs and the urinary opening from trauma and infection.
- It is vital for women’s sexual
response. The clitoris is the main organ of sexual arousal and orgasm in most women.
3. The vulva and the perineum stretch to accommodate childbirth.

State the purpose of Meiosis
The main purpose of Meiosis is to divide reproductive diploid cells into haploid cells for reproduction.
Describe the 8 stages of meiosis
- Prophase I (crossing over occurs)
- Metaphase I
- Anaphase I
- Telophase I
- Prophase II
- Metaphase II
- Anaphase II
- Telophase II
Ovulation
The event of de Graaf’s follicles rupturing and releasing fully developed ovarian cells. It is the phase of a female’s menstrual cycle when an egg(ovule) is released from the ovaries.
Describe the endocrine function og the corpus luteum.
After ovulation, it secretes Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
