9.3 Absorption Flashcards
Where does the absorption start at ? Absorbed by who ?
ileum of the small intestine . Absorbed by villi.
Adaptation of ileum for absorption :
1.L__
Long and folded to provide a large surface area for abrsoption of digested food .
Adaptation of ileum for absorption :
2. N____
Numerous villi to absorb nutrients .
What are villi ?
Villi are tiny projections in the wall of ileum .
What does villi consists of ?
Consists of lacteal , a network of blood capillaries and a thin epithelium .
On the surface of villus , there are many tiny projections called ?
Microvillus .
Function of microvillus :
Provide a large surface area to increase the rate of nutrient absorption .
Adaptations of villus for absorption :
1. One
The epithelial layer of villus is one cell thick to increase the rate of nutrient absorption .
Adaptations of villus for absorption :
2.Network / transport
Has a network of blood capillaries to transport digestive products to the whole body and allow rapid absorption.
Adaptations of villus for absorption :
3. lacteal
Has many lacteal to absorb and transport fatty acids , glycerol , vitamin ADEK .
Adaptations of villus for absorption :
4. microvilli
Has many microvilli to increase the surface area for nutrient absorption .
Adaptations of villus for absorption :
5. move back and forth
Villi can move forward and backward to come into contact with digested food and facilitate diffusion .
Function of goblet cell in the ileum :
Produces mucus which protects the epithelial cell from being digested by enzymes
