9.2 Memory Flashcards
What is encoding?
process of transferring sensory information into our memory system
What is working memory?
where information is maintained temporarily as part of a particular mental activity
What is the serial position effect?
when information presented in a list, individuals are more likely to recall the first and last items presented
What is primacy effect?
tendency to better recall the first items on a list
What is recency effect?
tendency to better recall the last item on a list
What is rehearsal in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
repitition of the information to be remembered
What is chunking in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
strategy in which information to be remember is organized into discrete groups of data
What is depth of processing in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
the idea that information that is thought about at a deeper level is better remembered
What is dual coding hypothesis in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
indicates that it is easier to remember words with associated images than either words or images alone
What is method of loci in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
involves imagining moving through a familiar place and in each place leaving a visual representation of the topic to be remembered
What is the peg word method in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
involves assigning images to a sequence of numbers
What is the self-reference effect in relation to processes that aid in encoding memories?
easier to recall things that are personally relevant
What is sensory memory?
initial recording of sensory information in the memory system
What is iconic memory?
brief photographic memory for visual information which decays in a few tenths of a second
What is echoic memory?
memory for sound which lasts 3-4 seconds
