9.2 Fetal Growth and Development Flashcards
When is the fetal period?
Weeks 9- term
What happens in the fetal period?
Growth and physiological maturation of the structures created in the embryonic period
What is crown-rump length used for?
Measure of fetal growth
What makes up the growth of the fetus in its early life?
Protein deposition
What makes up the growth of the fetus in its later life?
Fat deposition
Give 3 ways antenatal assessment can be done
Fetal movements
Uterine expansion- pubic symphysis to fundal height
Ultrasound scan
What can an ultrasounds scan assess?
Calculate age of fetus Rule out ectopic pregnancy Number of fetuses Fetal growth Fetal abnormalities
Give 3 fetal measurements used to monitor fetal growth
Biparietal diameter
Abdominal diameter
Femur length
What is the average birth weight?
3500g
Why may a fetus have a low birth weight?
Premature
Constitutionally small
Growth restriction
What occurs in the pseudoglandular phase of lung development?
Duct system begins to develop. Bronchioles develop
What occurs in the canalicular phase of lung development?
Formation of respiratory bronchioles due to bidding of the pseudoglandular bronchioles
What occurs in the terminal sac stage phase of lung development?
Terminal sacs bud off the respiratory bronchioles. Type I and II pneumocytes develop and start to produce surfactant
How are the breathing movements practiced before birth?
Amniotic fluid moves through lungs to condition the respitarory musclulature
What is respiratory distress syndrome?
Lack of surfactant due to premature birth leads to formation of bullae and shortness of breath
