9.1 Flashcards
What is renewable energy
Flow energy that can be reused and will not run out
What is non renewable energy
Resources that are finite and will eventually run out
What are recyclable resources
Energy that is made from waste products or who’s waste products can be turned into energy
What is opencast mining
Mining that involves stripping back many km2 of vegetation and mining on the earths surface instead of deep underground. It permanently scars the landscape and uses billions of tonnes of water to extract the coal.
What are the impacts of oil mining on the environment
The equipment needed take up lots of space so vegetation is cut down. Oil is also tricky to transport and oil spills such as the horizon oil spill in 2010 caused devastating damage on the surrounding ecosystem. Its particularly bad for marine and bird life because the oil being less dense floats at the top of the water and coats the wildlife making it hard to move or feed.
What is the impact of HEP on the environment
HEP is a good source of renewable energy but they end up flooding huge areas of land which is bad for the environment as habitat gets destroyed but also for the people who’s houses are lost
How do solar farms impact the environment
Solar farms change what people expect to see in a rural environment and ruin the athstetic of the landscape. Farms that use mirrors to reflect light generate lots of heat but have devastating
effects on the bird life as they can not stand the heat
