Paper 2 Key definitions Flashcards
Biome
Large scale ecosytems with their own distinct climate and vegetation
Ecosytem
A smaller area containing all the biotic and abiotic factors that interact with each other and themselves in the environment
Biodiversity
The amount of variety of species in an area which all have a role in sustaining the environment
Forest productivity
How much new biomass is being formed in a forest each year.
Renewable energy
Flow resources that are constantly being replaced and will never run out
Non-renewable energy
Finite Resouces that are being used up at a faster rate than which they are replaced and will eventually run out
Fossil fuels
Fuel made from dead animals and plants over millions of years e.g. coal oil and natural gas
Recyclable energy
Energy resources that are made from waste products or whos waste products can be used to generate energy.
Biotic factors
All the living factors that interact in an environment
Plants
Animals
Bacteria
Abiotic factors
All the non living things that interact in an enviroment
Water
Soil
Sunlight
Energy security
Having a sustainable, reliable and affordable supply of energy
Energy diversity
Reducing reliance on a single type of energy source increasing energy security
Carbon footprint
The sum of greenhouse gas emmissions rpoduced by a person, product or organisation
Climate
The long term weather conditions of an area
Interdependant
Biotic and abiotic factors are all closely linked in an ecosystem and changes to one factor effects that rest.
E.g. plants drop leaves which help the soil quality
