7.1 Flashcards
What is biodiversity
The variety of animals in an ecosystem that all have an important role in sustaining the ecosystem
Define Abiotic
The non living factors in the environment that make up an ecosystem
Define biotic
The living factors in an environment that make up an ecosystem
What is the climate like in a tundra biome
Very cold and dry climate with very little precipitation. Very little vegetation can survive here, mostly shrubs and mosses
What is the climate like for a boreal forest
Cold climate with low levels of precipitation bellow 500mm per year. Most trees are coniferous to make the most of the limited sunlight
What is the climate for temperate forests
Very damp climate with plenty of rainfall and 4 seasons. There are lots of deciduous vegetation here as they can lose there leaves in autumn
What is the climate for a temperate grassland
The climate receives lower levels of precipitation and has hot summers and cold winters. There are little trees but lots of small plants and shrubs. The hot weather speeds up decomposition so the soil is very rich.
What is the climate like in the desert
Extremely dry, rains once every 3 years. And is either extremely hot or cold. Plants have adapted to transpire at a slower rate to survive with less water
What is the climate like for tropical grasslands
Overall has low levels of precipitation receiving less than 900mm a year. It has 2 distinct climates, the wet season and the dry season. During the dry season the heat speeds up decomposition making the soil nutrient rich but during the wet season the water bleaches the land
What is the climate like in a tropical rainforest
The climate is warm all year round and receives plenty of rainfall. There is plenty of thick vegetation due to all the water and sunlight available. However since no sunlight reaches the ground and the water constantly washes all the nutrients away the soil is very poor.
What factors effect climates
