9: Vascular Histology Flashcards
Two factors formed by endothelium of the tunica intima
Von Willebrand factor + P selectin
Von Willebrand factor vs p selectin functions
Von Willebrand: hemostasis
P selectin: inflammation
Vasa vasorum and Nervi vasorum
Vasa vasorum: vessels that supply blood to vascular tunics themselves
Nervi vasorum: ANS input that controls contraction of vascular SM
Metarterioles
First branch off arterioles to supply tissues
Precapillary sphincter of metarterioles
Regulate blood flow through caps - when contracted they stop blood from flowing thru those capillaries; based on metabolic demand
Thoroughfare channel of metarterioles
Distal end of metarteriole that connects to post-cap venule
Pericytes
Perivascular contractile cells with branching cytoplasmic processes around capillaries
What factor controls pericytes?
NO
Three types of capillaries
Continuous: no gaps
Fenestrated: some gaps
Discontinuous: large gaps
Tunics in veins vs arteries
Vein tunics not as well defined
What layer of veins may contain valves?
Tunica intima
Vein valves
Semilunar flaps of thin CT core + endothelium
Three things that make veins different than arteries
- Thinner walls
- Larger lumen
- Lumen often collapsed
