14: Regulation Of BP And Endocrinology Flashcards
How is aortic sinus different from carotid sinus?
Aortic: higher threshold for activation + continues to respond above saturation + less sensitive to rate
What does RAAS stand for?
Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system
How long does RAAS last?
Begins in minutes and builds over a period of days/longer
Three named natriuretic peptides
- ANP: atrial
- BNP: brain
- CNP: C-type
Orthostatic hypotension
Lying supine and rising to standing position -> lightheaded and dizzy, can cause syncope
Mechanism of orthostatic hypotension?
Standing -> pooling of blood in veins -> slight decrease to baroreceptors -> increased symp outflow -> increases HR, CO, and TPR
Two causes of HTN and the percents
- 90-95%: idiopathic
2. 5-10%: secondary (from kidneys, endocrine, or CV)
Two types of idiopathic HTN and give examples
- Unmodifiable: increasing age, FHx
2. Modifiable: obesity, physical inactivity, elevated salt consumption
Recommended no more than how much sodium in a day?
2,300mg
