11: Thorax Neurology Flashcards
Three regions of esophagus
- Cervical part
- Thoracic part
- Abdominal part
What part of the thorax holds the thoracic esophagus?
Posterior mediastinum
Four constrictions of the esophagus
- Cricopharyngeus M (UES)
- Aortic arch
- Left bronchus
- Esophageal hiatus of thoracic diaphragm (LES)
Path of left recurrent laryngeal N from vagus
Loops under aortic arch and ligamentum arteriosum to return to larynx
Where do anterior and posterior vagal trunks enter the abdomen?
Thru esophageal hiatus of diaphragm
Between what muscles are the intercostal N’s
Between internal and innermost intercostals
Where are parasymps never found?
Body wall or extremities
What stimulates glandular secretions?
Parasymp NS
What organs does the vagus N supply in thorax?
Lungs, bronchi, pleura, heart, pericardium
What type of Autonomics is found in each of the four thoracic autonomic plexuses?
All four are mixed symp and parasymp
4 Symp functions of the pulmonary plexus
- Bronchodilator of bronchi and bronchioles
- Inhibits glands of bronchi and bronchioles
- Vasoconstriction pulmonary vessels
- Visceral sensory from lungs, bronchi, pleura
7 Parasymp functions of pulmonary plexus
- Bronchoconstrictor to bronchi and bronchioles
- Secretory to glands of bronchi and bronchioles
- Vasodilator of pulmonary vessels
- Cough reflex from bronchial mucosa
- Reflexive from interalveolar CT
- Pressure sensory from pulmonary A
- Chemoreceptor for pulmonary V
2 Symp functions of cardiac plexus
- Innervates nodal tissue to increase HR and heart contractions
- Vasomotion to pericardium
2 Parasymp functions of cardiac plexus
- Decreases HR, reduces heart contraction force
2. Vasoconstriction coronary A’s
Symp function of esophageal plexus
Inhibits peristalsis and esoph glands
