9 Ocular Pharmacology Flashcards
1
Q
drugs used to cause mydriasis
A
adrenergic agonist(a1AR) - phenylephrine
cholinergic antagonist(M3) - tropicamide, atropine, cyclopentolate, homatropine, scopolamine
2
Q
drugs used to lower IOP(glaucoma)
A
b-antagonists;
- timolol(b1/2ARs)
a-agonists:
- brimonidine(a2)
- apraclonidine(a2)
cholinergic agonists
- pilocarpine
- carbamylcholine
also: prostaglandin analogues, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, osmotic agents
3
Q
steps of diagnosing horner’s syndrome
A
- narrow down the eyeball
- which pupil does not correct properly?
-
cocaine drops
- if horners, no dilation occurs
- narrow down which nerve - hydroxyamphetamine
- if 3rd nerve is working, should dilate
- if affected eye failes to dilate, likely 1/2 order neuron
- get chest x-ray; might be a tumor!
4
Q
medications that can precipitate an attack of acute angle glaucoma?!
A
medications causing pupillary dilation
anti-cholinergic side effects
