The west was very vast and sparsely populated, transportation was slow

That is was your responsibility to sort your own problems out, lots of people carry guns and if you shoot someone in self defence then it’s not breaking the law

People who took the law into their own hands
What did the vigilantes do?
Drove suspected criminals out of town and lynched them
We’re vigilantes good or bad?
They were both, sometimes they helped but often they made the problem worse
Who were US marshals
They were appointed by the president to oversee a state or territory
Who were town marshals
They were appointed by the people of the towns to overlook the town
Who were sheriffs?
Elected by the county for a 2 year period of office
Who were the Texas Rangers?
Small army of men employed to enforce law in Texas in 1820s
The Pinkerton detective agency?
A private company which was hired by banks railroads and stage coaches to provide protection
