What did the early Europeans traders do?
The developed trading ports in the east (Boston and Newyork)

Armies to protect them

Who were mountain men?
Explorers and fur trappers who had some knowledge of the routes that would become the Oregon and California trails in the 1840s
What was the only possible route through the Rockies?
The south pass
What were push factors in the east?
Poverty, disease, religious persecution, taxes, over crowding
What were some pull factors of the west
New start, tall tales, fertile cheap land, government encouragement, gold and silver
What were the Oregon and California trails like?
Stretched about 2000 miles and took about 5 months by wagon, rivers and mountains had to be crossed
Who were the Donner Party
They were heading for California and tried a short cut, they got trapped in the Sierra Nevada in deep snow in 1846
How many of the Donner party survived and how?
50 of the 87 survived till next spring, but eating the dead
What was manifest destiny
White Americans saw it as their God given right to occupy and govern all of North America, they thought they were superior to the natives
