Who was the faith started by
Joseph smith
What did Smith claim?
That he saw a vision from an angel, who told him to find some gold plates in the hills
When was the Book of Mormon published?
In 1830
What were some religious beliefs of the Mormons
Polygamy ( having more than one wife) they called non Mormons Gentiles, racial equality, against drinking and gambling
Why didn’t people like the Mormons
Polygamy was immoral, fear of expansion, they thought they would take over, they disagreed with freeing slaves, they were jealous of their success
What happened in Kirtland Ohio
They founded a bank there, non Mormons invested there and it was successful, economic crisis in 1830 led to bankruptcy and people lost their money, blamed the Mormons- chased them out
What happened in Missouri
They mixed with blacks and encouraged them to join the church, Gentiles were jealous of their hard work and thought they were superior, the government issued an extermination order( they left to nauvoo)
What happened in Nauvoo, Illinois
They re built the town of commerce and called on nauvoo, gained a charter so they could run it as an independent state, Joseph smith had a bison that polygamy was ok in 1844, he was criticised and destroyed the printing press (like a dictator) he announced he was running for president and was killed in jail

It was owned by Mexico so outside of US control

What was so good about Young
He was very organised, more determined and considerate than Smith
Why was their joinery west successful
They were very prepared, camps were set up along the way, crops were planted which marked out the routes for them to follow, winter quarters were built to spend the winter, blacksmiths were stationed along the route
How did they succeed at Salt Lake City
They built irritation, made bricks out of mud, there was not private land it was assigned but the church
