9- circulatory system Flashcards
1
Q
what are the advantages of double circulation
A
- blood returning from the lungs has a much higher pressure to go around the body
- more oxygen can be delivered faster
2
Q
why and how does physical activity increase heart rate
A
- as you exercise, the more energy you need, so respiration increases
- therefore more oxygen is needed to be moved to the muscles and CO2 away from the muscles
- pH of the blood increases so the brain signals to the heart to beat more frequently
3
Q
what are arteries and what are their adaptations
A
- vessels that carry blood from heart to other organs
- they have thick, collagen-rich walls and a narrow lumen for high blood pressure
4
Q
what are capillaries and what are their adaptations
A
- the branches of arterioles
- tiny, and very close to the cells
- carries glucose and O2 to the cells and removes CO2
- one cell thick permeable membrane
5
Q
what are veins and what are their adaptations
A
- thin walls and wide lumen; so lower pressure
- one ways valves
6
Q
how do platelets stop bleeding
A
- soluble protein fibrinogen is present in the blood
- enzyme thombrin turns fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin
