Why did many farmers want the government to print more paper money in the decades following the Civil War? Why would this practice actually hurt the economy?
The farmers wanted the government to print more money and increase the supply of money in circulation because it would bring inflation, the rapid increase of prices. They believed that inflation could increase the prices they received for their crops and make it easier to pay off their loans. The problem with this practice is that inflation makes it more difficult for everyone, including farmers, to buy the things they need.
48
How did the philanthropy of men like Andrew Carnegie help all Americans?

During his life, Carnegie gave away more than $350 million. He donates 7,000 pipe organs to churches and built over 3,000 public libraries.
