Q

Is Briseis right to accuse Achilles of infidelity?

A

As a bed slave/concubine, no, as she would have no right to. In actual fact, however, yes. Achilles has lain with other women and so she is correct in that he has not been faithful to her (although again he doesn’t have to be)

16
Q

How did Oenene get her medical knowledge?

A

As a prize for being raped by Apollo (he gave her the knowledge)

17
Q

What picture of Paris emerges from Oenene’s letter?

A

That he is a bad husband who left as soon as he found something better

18
Q

What are the similarities and differences between what Ovid does in the Heroides and what we have been doing in class when we explain texts from the perspective of a particular character?

A
  • Both tell the story from the perspective of a character and use opiniated and emotive language
  • Heroides concerns letters supposedly sent between characters rather than a simple narration of events
19
Q

What do you think of the Heroides?

A

It is good for seeing the perspective of female characters as this wouldn’t be something greatly explored in the Iliad
