Problem with GDP and GNI
Fails to show disparity between rich and poor
Subsistence agriculture not included although provides for many.
Few measures concerning informal economy, this can be considerable for many countries.
HDI
(Human Development Index) Measure based on: -life expectancy -education (literacy and years of schooling) -GDP per capita.
Figure calculated ranges from 0 (low) to 1 (high)
Problem with HDI
Doesn’t take into account environmental quality, democracy, inequality or national security.
HPI
(Happy Planet Index)
Measures sustainable well-being
Based on:
•Life expectancy
•Experienced well-being
•Ecological footprint
Problem with HPI
Wellbeing is a very subjective concept and it is only calculated every five years.
