Military Intervention
any form of intervention that involves military action
Military aid
Consists of money, weapons, equipment or expertise given to a developing country to help them protect their borders, fight terrorism and combat piracy or drugs and people trafficking
Direct military action
physical action taken by a group. E.g. air strikes in Syria by US
Indirect military action
may take the form of covert support for factions e.g. providing weapons to one side in a conflict
Short-term effect of Iraq
Removed Hussein and oppressive security forces, although no trace found of WMDs. In 2005, Iraqis voted first free election in country for 15 yrs
US-funded vaccination programme reduced infant mortality by 75%
Long-term effect of Iraq
Lack of understanding long-term planning by coalition forces left Iraq without system needed to restore security, foster democracy or protect human rights:
Iraq political instability allowed corruption to flourish. 2015, ranked 161/168 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index
Since fall of Hussien human rights insecure. 2015 report by Human Rights Watch found evidence of gov sponsored violence e.g killing Sunni civilians
