8.3 CNS and Sleep Flashcards
What are the 3 types of neurons?
- Sensory
- Interneuron
- Motor
Draw a sensory neuron
Cell body is on the axon
Draw a motor neuron
Cell body is within the dendrites
What are the 5 main regions of the CNS
- Telencephalon (brain)
- Cerebellum
- Diencephalon
- Brain stem
- Spinal cord
What is another name for the Telencephalon
Cerebral cortex/ brain
How is the cerebral cortex divided?
It is divided into two vortices by the saggiato plane. The right and left cerebral hemispheres.
Divided into lobes
What are the 4 lobes and their functions?
Frontal lobe - decision making, problem solving and planning
Parietal lobe - receives and processes sensory information
Temporal lobe - memory, language, emotion, and hearing
Occipital lobe - sight
Primary motor cortex
Execute movements
Somatosensory cortex
Receives sensory input from the body
Functions of the cerebellum
Coordination, balance, equilibrium, muscle tone, motor movement
Diencephalon
B/w the cerebral cortex and midbrain
“Gateway to the cerebr; cortex”
Relax sensory and motor signals
Regulation of consciousness, sleep and alertness
Multiple nuclei (groups of cell bodies in the CNS)
What is included in the brain stem?
Midbrain, pons, medulla
Mesencephalon (midbrain) function
Smallest region responsible for hearing, seeing and orienting movements
Pons and medulla
Above the spinal cord and below the midbrain responsible for sleep wale bahvior and breathing and cardiovascular system
