What was the Carter Doctrine?
It was a policy which stated that the USA would use military force if necessary to defend its national interests in the Persian Gulf region.
What did the CD promise?
Military aid to all countries surrounding Afghanistan
- Carter promosed the creation of a quick-strike military force that could intervene anywhere in the world at short notice (Rapid Deployment Force)
- Carter called for the draft registration of 18-20 year old me.
- For congress to allow CIA to increase its intelligence gathering activities
Actions taken by the US:
- Carter asked the Senate to delay passing the SALT II Treaty
- The US cancelled all shipments of grain
- US companies were forbiddent to sell hi-tech there
- Assistance would be given to the Mujahideen
