What is a user research plan?
a plan of action to define what problem are we trying to solve, who are our target users, etc.
Why do we create them?
To keep the team focused on the goal, solve the correct issues, meet timelines, etc.
How do you structure a user research plan
One page (if you cannot summarize it within this limit, you probably don’t know your research that well)
- Define Problem
- Define Users
- Choose Methodology
Why does the author only use a few sentences or bullet points for each section except for the interview guide (which is the most time consuming)?
Stakeholders want to be engaged in the research process but prefer to not be overloaded with information. Keeping it concise will make it easier to keep everyone on the same page.
- Background
Few sentences about the research problem, the context of the research, etc.
- Stakeholders involved
internal or external. It’s everyone’s project now
- Research Objectives
Ideally, 2-3. Anything more might stretch you thin

- Methods
at least 2 methodologies to diversify your results
- Business Objectives (optional but recommended)
measurable metrics
- Participants
Creating personas, protopersonas can help pinpoint who you should interview (about 5 is enough if you chose correctly) Create a screener survey to weed out people you don’t want to talk to
- Interview Guide
Can be TBD for now. But make sure that it has structured questions but coupled with a conversation-like exchange
- UX metrics
- Timeline
