8 Rights And Responsibiltys. Flashcards
What are the problems with using the bible?
You may not know how to interpret it.
It is very old and out of date.
Some of the meaning may have been lost. It has been translated from Hebrew and Greek.
How is the bible used to make decisions?
Literalists follow it word for word. It is the world of God written by people guided by God.
Liberalists think that the bible has to be interpreted in todays world.
Others say that the Church must also be used as well as the bible.
How does the church help people make moral decisions?
Pope and magisterium. The pope writes encyclicals. The council write the catechism. You can read all of these.
The priest. He can pray for you to make the right decision. He can give advice in confession. A priest can write a homily.
The congregation. They can pray for you and use their own experience to give advice.
Why is situation ethics used?
It can be used in every situation.
It means the most loving thing happens.
Gives freedom of free will.
It follows the teachings of Jesus such as the golden rule.
How is situation ethics used?
Think about what you are doing.
Do the most loving thing. Follow the golden rule.
Look at the situation according to the specifics. Each problem is individual.
What are the problems with using situation ethics?
It causes disagreement which isn't love. Could lead to people being harmed. It can take along time to use. Everyone must agree for it to work. It can give a biased opinion. What you want happens.
Why should a person use their conscience to make moral choices?
It comes from God so it usually leads to the right thing happening.
It uses past experience to help you.
The CCC says “ a human must obey its conscience”
St Paul said we should and many other good Christians like Mother Theresa followed it.
It can be used all the time.
It makes you feel guilty if you do wrong.
What are the problems of using you conscience?
It can tell you to kill people, like with Paul Hill and Peter Sutcliffe.
It does’t draw you to do the right thing.
It can go against the rules.
People will have different ideas on what is right.
It can be impulsive.
It doesn’t always give a direct answer.
What is the nature of the human rights?
Formed in 1948 to prevent the things that happened in WWI from happening again.
There are guidelines on what every human is entitled to.
There aren’t laws but many nations have joined the scheme.
Name four human rights.
Freedom from torture and degraded treatment.
The right to liberty.
The right to marry and have a family.
The right to practise your own faith.
Why is the human rights declaration a good thing?
It allows freedom of speech. This means people can express their own opinion and this means a democratic government which works for the good of all.
It treats everyone equally meaning everyone in the world can have a good life.
Why does the church have the authority?
A priest has looked at the bible for 7 years and knows its messages.
The church has rules they think came from God to insure that we have one true faith.
The church is guided by the holy spirit so it will make the right decisions.
As the body of christ we are representing Jesus today. He gave us the authority to start the church.
There are too many sources to use when making a moral decision. Give reasons that agree.
They will contradict each other. Which do you follow?
Which one is the best source.
It takes a lot of time to check them all.
Why is the freedom from torture and degraded treatment important?
A person can’t force a person to do anything. Information can’t be forced out so people keep their privacy. If a person protests and goes in a hunger strike you can’t force feed them.
Explain the parable of the sheep and goats.
It talks of judgment day where Jesus will come again and split everyone into two groups in the way a Shepard would split up sheep and goats.
The good people are the sheep and they go to heaven as when Jesus was hungry they gave him food, when he was thirsty they gave him water and when he was homeless they gave him a place to sleep. They ask when they did these things to Jesus and he says “ truly, I say to you , as you did,it to one of the least of these brothers my brothers, you do to me”
He turns to the goats and says they didn’t help him, they ask when he needed it and he says what he said before but with some didn’ts in it.
