Q

What are some of the benefits of genetic enginering?

A

Stem cell therapy can cure Parkinson’s , Alzheimer’s and heart disease. Strokes, arthritis, diabetes, burns and spinal cord damage.
It is strictly monitored by law with strict guide lines so that it isn’t abused.
GM crops can feed more people and stop famine.

Q

Name some of the types of genetic engineering.

A

Cloning. Creating something that is the same.
Genetic therapy and PGD. Look at the DNA to find a gene that causes a disorder and get rid of it or changing someone(like in my sisters keeper) so that they can help a person.
GM crops. Changing crops so that they are cheaper, healthier or more hard wearing.

Q

It is wrong for humans to play God.

Give reason for.

A

God is Omniscient. He knows how to create life that works. We don’t know so would only make his work worse.
God made us the stewards of the Earth. We should look after and not change creation.
Playing God is comparing ones self to God which is blasphemy.
It often means embryos are destroyed which is murder.
Trying to make life perfect is wrong. This life is preparation for paradise. We don’t want heaven on Earth.

Q

It is wrong for humans to play God.

Give reasons against.

A

It can lead to curing of diseases, meaning lives can be saved which is what God wants. Jesus was a healer.
He gave us the ability to conduct genetic engineering. We should use our God given ability.
It means we know more about the world and how complex it is. This means we can appreciate the wonders of God better.
The golden rule. We would to be helped by genetic engineering.
Embryos are only potential human life when 14 days old.

Q

Should we care about global warming?

Give reasons for.

A

It leads to sea level rise which means land it flooded. People will have to move and land will will lost.
It will get hotter meaning more drought.

Q

Should we care about global warming?

Give reasons saying no.

A

We will be dead before there is any impact on us.
We naturally produce carbon dioxide. Why should we try to stop?
It is part of a 100,000 year cycle where temperature fluctuates.
Nature produces more CO2 then humans will ever do.
If it was due to humans the troposphere would get warmer quicker but it’s not.

Q

How does global warming happen?

A

CO2 is produced from burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil.
Methane is produced by cattle and paddy fields where rice is grown.
Nitrous oxide is produced when plants and animal die.
This traps the suns heat and the world gets hotter.
It could cause 350-600 million to suffer a water shortage.

Q

Do you think global warming is the greatest threat to our planet?

A

Yes as it can affect all parts of the environment. It causes temperatures to rise. This melts ice caps meaning sea levels rise and animal and plant habitats close to the coast will be flooded. The warmer temperatures also mean that animals are disturbed. Caterpillars are being born early in the year so birds can’t eat them later.

Q

Explain how global warming affects the enviroment?

A

Polar ice caps will melt and animals who use them as a habitat won’t have a place to go.
The melting of ice caps means that sea levels rise meaning that animal and plant habitats that are close to the sea will be destroyed.
The warming temperatures means that there has been an increase in insects and this has damaged trees. Spruce bark beetles have affected 4 million acres of forest.
The seas become hotter meaning that some marine organisms have moved into new habitats where they have a smaller chance of survival.

Q

Humans should be bothered by global warming.

Give reasons for and against.

A

For
It causes towns and cities to flood so millions of people will have to be re-located.
God made us stewards so we must look after the world and not damage it.
It will cause droughts in the developing world. Crops would fail and millions would be without food.
Against.
It is a 10,000 year cycle where the temperature changes.
Nature produces more CO2 then we do.
I will be dead before it affects me.

Q

Do you think enough is being done to solve the issue of global warming?

A

No as every year 15 million tonnes of paper is thrown away in the UK. This means that 15 million more trees will have to be cut down meaning they can’t absorb CO2 which causes global warming. We should recycle paper.
Also there are 20 million cars in the UK but only 3000 of them are electric. This means that lots of CO2 is put into the atmosphere. If enough was being done, we would have more electric cars.

Q

Why is pollution a major problem facing the planet.

A

Every year 900,000 tonnes of electrical waste is produced and 90% of it goes to land fill. It causes 40% of the lead in land fills and it can get into rivers and other habituates poisoning plants and animals.
Chemicals from factories get into the food chains of polar bears. They become infertile meaning the number of baby cubs goes down.
Power stations produce large amounts of sulphur dioxide. This causes acid rain which damages forests and pollutes rivers so large numbers of plants and animals die.
Every year 800,000 pieces of litter are put into the oceans. This means 1000000 birds die every year because they eat it.

Q

Do you think humans are doing all they can to look after the world. Give reasons for no.

A

No as we produce lots of sulphur dioxide which poisons rivers and kills many plants and animals.
In 2005 60,000 square KM of wood was cut down. This means that millions of trees and animals died which isn’t good enough as God wants us to look after the world.
Humans are also producing lots of green house gas. This causes global warming and sea level rise meaning animal habituates are flooded.

Q

Do you think humans are doing all they can to look after the world. Give reasons for yes.

A

If the levels of CO2 stay at the currant levels the temperature of the world won’t reach critical levels. This means no real damage is being done.
Last year in the UK the amount of rubbish being recycled was larger than the amount going into land fill. This means humans are getting better at looking after the environment.
In 4 years the amount of solar panels grew 60% and the amount of biodiesel increased by 41%. This proves that humans are using less energy that damages the environment and we are trying to improve.

Q

How does acid rain work?

A

Acid rain is created when burning fuel is mixed with sulphur and sulphur dioxide gets into the air. This can erode buildings and damage the enviroment.

Q

How does eutrophication work?

A

It is one of the types of water pollution. Fertiliser gets into the water causing plant life to flourish. However this means that more oxygen is used up so fish can’t breath it. They die.

Q

Explain why natural resources are a concern for people.

A

They are running out. In 40 years oil will run out meaning energy prices will rise and so will transport costs.
Natural resources such as oil, gas and coal produce CO2 when burnt. This causes global warming and the melting of polar ice caps.
If we keep using them at the currant rate there will be none left for future generations and it is an un-Christian thing to do.
We are wasting the gifts that God gave to us. He gave us enough resources so we have to save them.

Religious people shouldn’t drive cars. Give reasons against.

A

It would not make a large difference. Everyone would need to stop driving to save the environment.
If they have electric cars they won’t damage the environment by producing CO2.
Owning a car means a religious person can do nice things such as take people places, visit the elderly and help move things.

Q

Religious people shouldn’t drive cars. Give reasons for.

A

All types of cars cause environmental damage. Diesel and petrol cars produce CO2 and electric cars need batteries which have to be taken around the Earth. Nickel for the batteries is minded and the mines produce sulphur dioxide which causes acid rain,so they cause more damage then petrol cars.
Religious people believe that

Q

Why is stewardship important to christians?

A

Psalm 24:1 “the world and all that is in it belong to the Lord”. It is not our world to change.
Genesis 1:31 “God looked at everything he had made, and was very pleased.” He made the world perfect so we mustn’t change it.
God has given us the world. It is a gift and we must respect it to show our gratitude. The CCC also says this.
We must treat others as we would want to be treated. Future generations will depend on a well looked after world so we must look after it for them.

26
Q

Define Allah.

A

God.

27
Q

Define Muhammad (PBUH).

A

Prophet, man chosen by Allah as a messenger.

28
Q

Define Qur’an

A

The sacred book of Islam.

29
Q

Define Hadith.

A

The sayings and actions of the prophet Muhammad as recorded by his family and friends.

30
Q

Define Shari’ah Law

A

Law based in the Qur’an the teachings of Muhammad and work of Islamic scholars.

31
Q

Explain why Muslims look after the world.

A

Muslims believe that all Muslims are part of the Ummah. This is the community of Muslims and includes future generations. They look after the Ummah and show their love for it by looking after the world.
The world is a gift from Allah. To show their respect for Allah they must look after it.
He made all muslims Khalifahs. They must look after the world and they will be judged on how good a Khalifah they were.
This means that they campaign for new laws, they persuade people to look after the world and they plant trees.

32
Q

Religious people should be leading the world in finding solutions to environmental problems. Give reasons for.

A

Most faiths say that it is your job to look after the world.
Everyone in the world depends on the environment. To show your love for them, you should look after the environment.
Many faiths say that an omnipotent God created the world. Finding solutions to environmental problems will lead to a better understanding of his world will lead to a greater understanding of the complexity and beauty of his work.

33
Q

Religious people should be leading the world in finding solutions to environmental problems. Give reasons against.

A

It is more important for religious people to teach others not to sin as that is more important.
Omnipotent and omni-benevolent God would never let his creation get destroyed and he would never put us in danger, so there is no point.
Religious people are idiots who believe in a God even when there is no proof. They couldn’t offer any proper help.
It isn’t just the responsibility of the religious.

34
Q

How does AIH work?

A

Sperm from the husband is put in the uterus. The genetics stay the same and it can be used for many infertility problems. It is however expensive.

35
Q

How does AID work?

A

Sperm from a Donner is put in the uterus. A single mother can have a child and the husband can be infertile. A strangers genetic info is passed on. Not the dads.

36
Q

How does egg donation work?

A

A donner egg is fertilised with the husbands sperm and put into the uterus. The women can be infertile but her genetics aren’t passed on.

37
Q

How does embryo donation work?

A

A donated egg and sperm are put into the womb. Both the husband and wife can be infertile but none of the genetic info is passed on.

38
Q

How does IVF work?

A

Egg and sperm are taken from the couple and fertilised in the lab and put into the womb. It can be used when the women has blocked fallopian tubes. It is expensive and doesn’t always work.

39
Q

How does surrogacy work?

A

A IVF egg is put into a women who gives it to the couple after birth. The women doesn’t need to be fertile. It is hard to find a women who will be willing to go through with it.

40
Q

Give some random figures about fertility treatment.

A

1 in 6 couples will struggle to conceive naturally.
It costs between £2500-£5000.
IVF has a 15% chance of success.
12% of children born each year came about because of fertility treatment.

41
Q

Surrogacy is a good option for infertile couples. Give reasons for.

A

It lets them have children.
Gay couples and older women can have children.
It full fills the human right to children.
It is safer for the child.

42
Q

Surrogacy is a good option for infertile couples. Give reasons against.

A

Can adopt a child.
The Church thinks that it is adultery as it should only included 2 people.
The mother misses out on being pregnant.

43
Q

IVF is wrong. Give reasons for.

A

It is the will of God whether we have children or not and we shouldn’t go against God’s will.
You can adopt a child and the world is very over crowded so you shouldn’t try and bring more in.
IVF is very expensive and the money would be better spent helping lots of children in the foster care system or in poorer parts of the world.

44
Q

IVF is wrong. Give reasons against.

A

It for fills the human right to have children.
In Genesis 1:28 God said we should “be fruitful and multiply”. IVF means we can for fill God’s will.
It means a single parent can have a child and they can show just as much love for the child as a couple.

45
Q

What is the Catholic attitude to fertility treatment?

A

Sperm and egg donation is wrong as it includes a third party and is adultery.
IVF often means that embryos are created and then destroyed which is murder.
Masturbation is a sin so that can’t be used.
It is un-natural as God want’s sex to be used.
The CCC says fertility treatment is “ a grave sin”
1 Samuel 6 “God had closed her womb” It is God’s will.

46
Q

In eyes of the RCC when is IVF and AI ok?

A

No spare embryos were created.
It doesn’t replace sex in marriage.
No 3rd party is used like a donner.

47
Q

What does the RCC think about sperm and egg donners?

A

It is “mechanical adultery”
The donner has a responsibility to the child.
It is a violation of the marriage union.

48
Q

What does the church say are the alternatives to fertility treatment?

A

Adoption.

Work with children. Become a teacher, child minder, nurse.

49
Q

What are some of the other Christian views on fertility treatment?

A

All things come from God. He gave us fertility treatment and we should use it. If he didn’t like it, he could stop us.
Fertility treatment is a miracle. Jesus used them to heal the sick and he would approve as it is healing the sick.
It means the marriage vows can be for filled as they can have children.
Be fruitful and multiply.
The golden rule.
Show your love for the child.

50
Q

All Christians should support fertility treatment. Give reasons for.

A

God gave us the ability to conduct fertility treatment. We should use all our God given abilities.
When a couple marries they make a vow to each other to have children. This for fills the vows.
Genesis 1:28 be fruitful and multiply. He wants us to have children.

51
Q

All Christians should support fertility treatment. Give reasons against.

A

1 Samuel verse 6 “God has closed her womb”. It is the will of God whether we have children and we can’t go against it.
The CCC forbids it.
Catholics believe that life begins at conception. Normally many embryos are created and discarded which is murder.

52
Q

What is the muslim view on surrogacy?

A

It is considered wrong as the sperm of a man goes into a women who isn’t his wife which is adultery.
The Qur’an talks about lineage and its importance. This is the family identity. Who is the mother?

53
Q

Explain the two muslim views on fertility treatment.

A

Some think it is wrong as Allah choses when a person has children and we can’t go against him.
Others say that infertility is an illness and doctors should be able to treat it and heal the sufferers.

54
Q

What is the muslim view on IVF and AIH?

A

As long as the sperm and egg are from the couple it is ok. It should only take place in marriage.
Spare embryos from IVF can be discarded as Allah breaths live into them after 120 days.

55
Q

What is the muslim view on sperm and egg donners?

A

It can’t be used as the child doesn’t know the biological parents.
It is adultery as it uses cells from out side the marriage.

56
Q

Surrogacy is an act of Christian compassion. Give reasons for.

A

Jesus said we should follow the golden rule.
An infertile couple can show their love for the child and Christians should show love.
In 1 John it says we should make self sacrifice for the sake of others. Surrogacy is an example of this.

57
Q

Surrogacy is an act of Christian compassion. Give reasons against.

A

It is adultery as sperm from a man who isn’t her husband goes into her and this goes against the 10 commandments.
If God wants a person to have children he will let them. Against the will of God.
God created sex for procreation and it should be the only cause. As it doesn’t use sex it is a sin.

58
Q

Give some random figures about organ transplantation.

A

1000 people will die each year on the waiting list.
7410 people are on the waiting list.
1 person can save up to 51 people.
You can become a donner by registering on the donner list which can be done when you apply for a driving licence or a boots advantage card.

59
Q

Why does Christianity support organ transplantation?

A

The immortality of the soul. After death your soul goes to heaven but the body stays here. You don’t need it after death.
St Paul said “you would have taken out your own eyes if you could have and given them to me”
One of the popes said that it was “praise worthy”
1 John saids “we too then should give our lives for our brothers and sisters.” This means we should make sacrifices for others.
The greatest commandment”love thy neighbour” supports it as you helping someone in need.
Golden rule.
It is not our body. It is God’s and we should use them to do this work.
You can give a kidney as you only need one and having two is being selfish.

60
Q

Explain why some Muslims don’t support organ transplantation

A

The sanctity of life says that Allah created all life and he should chose when life begins or ends. We can’t go against it.
Allah created you the way you are for a reason. If he made you fail then you should accept it and not change it.”it is he ,who has created all things”
They believe that at the day of resurrection, your body is brought up from the dead and you can’t have anything missing.
Shari’ah law says breaking the bone of a dead person is similar to breaking the bone of a living person, so organ transplantation can’t take place.

61
Q

Give reasons why some Muslims allow organ transplantation.

A

The UK Muslim law council says it’s ok if there is a high likelihood of success, it is the only option, and the donner or the next of kin allows it.
“Necessities permit the prohibited” meaning that if it is the only option then the sin can take place.
“Whosever help another will be granted help from Allah”. Helping people is very good.
Islam teaches it is every Muslims duty to alleviate pain and suffering and to save life. Organ donation does this.

62
Q

Do you think the law should be changed to an “opt out” system of donation?

A

Yes as it will mean it will be easier for people to become donners meaning more available organs.
Also the more organs will mean less pressure on individuals or grieving relatives to donnate.

63
Q

What are some of the social reasons for genetic enginering?

A

It can save lives.
It can improve the quality of life.
It can stop famine.
