only in malnourished premature infants and weak elderly patients;
now, the disease is almost diagnostic for AIDS.
PNEUMOCYSTIS PNEUMONIA (PCP)
The disease is known by the abbreviation PCP, which originally
stood for
“Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia”(incorporating
Difficulty breathing, anemia, hypoxia (low tissue oxygen), and
fever
● Nonproductive cough occurs in some cases
● Rarely, extrapulmonary lesions develop in the lymph nodes,

Pneumocystis Jirovecii
Normal member of the respiratory microbiome
● It is an obligate parasitic ascomycete (formerly known as P.
carinii) , usually specific for humans and characterized by a
strong for the lungs and airborne host to host transmission
Pneumocystis Jirovecii
Cannot survive on its own environment
● Transmitted by inhalation of droplets containing the fungus
● Common disease in AIDS patients
● Once the fungus enters the lungs of an immunocompromised
patient, it multiplies rapidly, extensively colonizing the lungs
