8 - Membranes Flashcards
Define a membrane
simplest organs – only 2 tissue types
o consist of epithelium attached to CT (with a basement membrane between them)
What are the 4 membrane types
Mucous membrane
Serous membrane
Synovial membrane
Cutaneous membrane
Describe the mucous membrane
line cavities which open directly to the body exterior
also called the mucosa of the… e.g. digestive, respiratory, urinary, reproductive systems
2 layers:
a) epithelial layer (avascular) varies from simple squamous to pseudostratified
b) CT (loose areolar – vascular), named the lamina propria, nourishes epithelial cells
What is the lamina propria?
The loose areolar CT tissue in the mucous membrane.
What is the serous membrane?
line closed cavities that DO NOT open to the exterior i.e. abdominal and chest cavities
covers organs in these cavities
also called serosa in the… (especially the peritoneal cavity)
serous fluid between layers (slippery)
What is the structure of a serous membrane?
composed of epithelial layers (often simple squamous) next to serous cavity, & CTs (areolar) on the outsides
What are the two layers of the serous membrane?
a) parietal layer – against cavity wall
b) visceral layer – against organ
What are the locational names of serous membranes?
o Pleura – lung
e.g. parietal & visceral pleura
o Peritoneum – abdominal organs
o Pericardium – heart
Describe synovial membranes
in joints
areolar CT, no epithelium (only ONE tissue type!)
Synovial membranes are tissue level, not organ. It’s a lie!
Describe cutaneous membranes
skin
o epithelium = stratified squamous (named the epidermis)
o CT = areolar and dense irregular (named the dermis)
