7a. Gravitational Fields Flashcards
Gravitational field strength
The force done per unit mass.
Gravitational potential
The work done per unit mass to bring an object from infinity to that point.
Equipotential
A line of equal potential or constant gravitational potential - this will be a circle around a single radial field.
Escape velocity
The minimum velocity required for an object to completely exit a gravitational field.
Geostationary satellite
A satellite that has an orbital period of 24 hours orbits in the same plane as the equator - hence does not appear to move from its position over the earth.
Kepler’s third law
For any planet, the cube of the radius of its orbit is equal to the square of the orbital period.
