5b. Particles Flashcards
Lepton number
The number associated with electrons, muons, taus and their neutrinos. An electron has a lepton number of +1 and an anti electron has a lepton number of -1.
Baryon number
The number associated with baryons (eg. protons and neutrons). A neutron has a baryon number of 1 and an anti neutron has a baryon number of -1.
Isotope
An atom with the same number of proton, but a different number of neutrons.
Annihilation
Where a particle meets its anti particle and are converted into 2 gamma photons.
The weak force
The force responsible for beta decay - the force carrier is the W boson.
The strong force
The force that holds baryons together in the nucleus. It has a range of 2-3 fm and it’s force carrier is the virtual pion.
