Hooke’s Law
The extension of a material is directly proportional to the force applied, so long as the elastic limit is not exceeded.
Elastic limit
The point beyond which a wire is permanently deformed.
The limit of proportionality
The point beyond which a wires extension is no longer proportional to the force applied.
Plastic deformation
Deformation where the material does not return to its original shape / length.
Stress
Tensile force (tension) divided by cross sectional area.
Strain
Extension divided by original length.
Brittle behaviour
A material that does not exhibit plastic behaviour / deformation.
The Young’s Modulus
Stress divided by strain.
Ductile
A material that can be drawn into wires.
Yield point
The point at which the stress in a wire suddently drops when subjected to increasing strain.
