1. Mechanics Flashcards
The centre of mass
The point through which a single force has no turning effect
The moment of a force
Force times perpendicular distance to the pivot
The moment of a couple
One of the forces times by the perpendicular distance between them
The principle of moments
In equilibrium, the sum of the moments clockwise are equal to the sum of the moments anticlockwise
Work done
Force times distance moved in the direction of the force
A vector
A quantity with both direction and magnitude
Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
An object will continue at constant velocity until acted on by a resultant force. This is also true for velocity = 0
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
Force is equal to the rate of change of momentum
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion
If object A exerts a force on object B, object B will exert a force on object A that is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction
An elastic collision
A collision where both momentum is conserved. KInetic energy is NOT conserved.
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
Impulse
The change in momentum
