τὴν δὲ βαρὺ στενάχων προσέφη πόδας ὠκὺς Ἀχιλλεύς:

‘μῆτερ ἐμή, τὰ μὲν ἄρ μοι Ὀλύμπιος ἐξετέλεσσεν:

“My mother, true, these things Zeus brought about for me,

ἀλλὰ τί μοι τῶν ἦδος ἐπεὶ φίλος ὤλεθ᾽ ἑταῖρος

Πάτροκλος,

But what pleasure in these things is there for me, when my dear companion Patroclus has perished,

τὸν ἐγὼ περὶ πάντων τῖον ἑταίρων

ἶσον ἐμῇ κεφαλῇ;

πρῶτος ἐμῷ ὑπὸ δουρὶ τυπεὶς ἀπὸ θυμὸν ὀλέσσῃ,

Having returned home, since neither does my spirit bid me live nor be among men, unless Hector struck first by my spear should lose his life,

Πατρόκλοιο δ᾽ ἕλωρα Μενοιτιάδεω ἀποτίσῃ.”

And pay for the slaying of Patroclus, the son of Menoitius.
