60-77 Flashcards
Having returned home into the house of Peleus.
But as for me, while he lives and sees the light of day,
He suffers, nor can I defend him at all, going.
But go I will, so that I might see my dear child, and I might hear
What pain has come to him, [though] abstaining from war.”
Thus having spoken she left the cave; and with her
They went weeping, and for them the wave of the sea all around
Was parted: and when indeed they came to fertile Troy
They went up onto the shore one after the other, where in a crowd
The ships of the Myrmidons had been drawn up around swift Achilles.
By him, as he groaned deeply, stood his revered mother,
And having wailed sharply she took the head of her son,
And lamenting addressed winged words:
‘τέκνον τί κλαίεις; τί δέ σε φρένας ἵκετο πένθος;
“Child, why do you cry? What pain has come to your heart?
Speak, do not hide it. These things were fulfilled for you
By Zeus, when you prayed before, raising your hands, that
All of the sons of the Achaeans be hemmed in at the ship-sterns,
And, in sore need of you, should suffer shameful deeds.”
