ὣς καὶ ἐγών, εἰ δή μοι ὁμοίη μοῖρα τέτυκται,
Thus I too, if a similar fate has been prepared for me,
κείσομ᾽ ἐπεί κε θάνω: νῦν δὲ κλέος ἐσθλὸν ἀροίμην,

μὴ δέ μ᾽ ἔρυκε μάχης φιλέουσά περ: οὐδέ με πείσεις.
Do not keep me from battle though you love me. Nor will you persuade me.

Then the silver-footed goddess Thetis answered him:
‘ναὶ δὴ ταῦτά γε τέκνον ἐτήτυμον οὐ κακόν ἐστι
“Yes to these things, child, truly it is not a bad thing
τειρομένοις ἑτάροισιν ἀμυνέμεν αἰπὺν ὄλεθρον.
To ward sheer death away from your hard-pressed friends.
ἀλλά τοι ἔντεα καλὰ μετὰ Τρώεσσιν ἔχονται
But your fine armour is held among the Trojans,
χάλκεα μαρμαίροντα: τὰ μὲν κορυθαίολος Ἕκτωρ
Sparkling bronze. Hector of the gleaming helmet himself,
αὐτὸς ἔχων ὤμοισιν ἀγάλλεται: οὐδέ ἕ φημι
Having it on his shoulders, is exultant. Nor do I fancy he
δηρὸν ἐπαγλαϊεῖσθαι, ἐπεὶ φόνος ἐγγύθεν αὐτῷ.
Will glory for long, since heath [is] near him.
ἀλλὰ σὺ μὲν μή πω καταδύσεο μῶλον Ἄρηος
But you do not plunge into the turmoil of Ares yet,
πρίν γ᾽ ἐμὲ δεῦρ᾽ ἐλθοῦσαν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖσιν ἴδηαι:
Until you see me coming here in your eyes.
ἠῶθεν γὰρ νεῦμαι ἅμ᾽ ἠελίῳ ἀνιόντι
