Wyatt Rebellion (1554)
A
- tried to marry Edward Courtenay to Elizabeth, but he revealed plotting
- rebels forced to act early
- only Kent attacked (instead of four-pronged attack planned)
- raised 3000 men & laid siege to Cooling Castle (instead of straight to London)
- gave Mary time to rally forces
- Mary’s speech at Guildhall brought rebellion to an end

- feared he’d lose his position & influence with the arrival of foreigners

- troops sent by Mary to deal with Wyatt changed sides
- many waited to see what would happen & didn’t initially support Mary
- rising had been close to London

- lack of punishment (more punishment might lead to more unrest)
- Elizabeth & Courtenay survived
- speech at Guildhall flattered supporters & saved her
- failure made people realise the rebellion was futile & strengthened the regime
