- not a monk but was still abbot of the richest abbey, St Albans
- fathered children despite vow of celibacy

where Friar Standish attacked privileges of the clergy & was unpopular with bishops -> led to debate about the power of the church & state

support for the English church
A
- little evidence that the Pope was unpopular (unlike in Germany)
- clergy at local level were respected
- little evidence of clerical misconduct
- ordination rates remained high
- only evidence of disquiet over tithes in the south-east
- Church calendar supported rural activities (eg. festivals & Church ales)
- visitation results found few priests were ignorant
- large amounts of literature bought in urban areas (eg. ‘The Primer’, a collection of devotional works)
- large scale building projects continued
- most still left money in their wills to the Church
- founding of chantries
- parishioners contributed towards the purchase of images
- continued support for religious guilds (57% of people in Devon & Cornwall who made wills left money to them, 1520-29)
- many of absent bishops were on state business & appointed suffragans

A
- most noticeable in south-east & London
- some complaints from within Church itself (eg. 1511 -> Dean of St Paul’s, John Colet, accused clergy of being greedy & ambitious in a sermon)
- some absent bishops (eg. Wolsey didn’t visit York until 1529) despite appointing suffragans
- pluralism was common
