What religion was Edward?
Protestant
religious change phases during Edward’s rule
- 1547: attack on Catholicism
- 1548: lack of official doctrine, uncontrolled radical Protestant activity
- 1549-52: establishment of Protestant worship
- 1553: establishment of a fully reformed Church
Why were moves towards a more reformed religion slow during Edward’s rule?
support for Protestantism was weak & there was still a great deal of support for traditional Catholic practices

- Somerset’s policy = slow (only a moderate Protestant)
- bishops divided, most clergy & population opposed
- royal visitation to examine conditions of the Church

- clergy ordered to conduct services in English, ensure there was an English Bible & remove superstitious images
- chantries dissolved when parliament met
- parliament repealed Treason Act (lifted limits on what could be said)
radical activity (1548)
- abolition of Treason Act allowed more radical views
- attacks on altars & images
- pamphlets attacking mass
- govt had to issue proclamations to restore order & limit those who could preach (Jan-April 1548)
- Sept 1548 -> all preaching banned
- more Protestant measures brought in during autumn (position strengthened after victory agst Scots)

Act of Uniformity (1549)
- sacraments only at communion, baptism, confirmation, marriage & burial
- clergy could marry
- singing for the souls of the dead was ended
- holy communion, matins & evensong were in English
- laity could take communion in both kinds

- Forty-Two Articles (outlined doctrine & belief) drawn up but never became law (Edward’s death)
