7 Principles of Universal Design Flashcards
Name the 7 Principles
Equitable Use. Flexible Use. Simple and Intuitive Use. Perceptible Information. Tolerance for Error. Low physical effort. Size and space for approach and use.
Equitable Use
Useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. Should not segregate or stigmatize users or make anyone feel unintelligent
Flexible Use
Accommodate a wide range of preferences and abilities (right AND left hand users)
Simple and Intuitive
Regardless of user background and experience. Simplify complex information, use effective prompting towards task completion. Be consistent with user expectation. Utilize hierarchy. Provide effective prompting and feedback after task completion
Perceptible Information
Should effectively communicate information to the user, regardless of the user’s sensory ability. Contrast. Pictoral, verbal, and tactile modes to redundantly present important information
Tolerance for Error
Design should minimize and prevent hazards and adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Shield hazardous elements. Provide warnings and allow for corrections for accidental deletions etc
Low Physical Effort
Anyone should be able to use the design efficiently and comfortably, with minimal fatigue. the design should minimize repetitive actions and sustained effort
Size and space for approach and use
Elements should be spaced out enough so that they are not accidentally selected. Clickable areas should be large enough so that someone with mobility issues can easily select them
