Intensity and direction of behavior
- intensity = degree of effort put forth
- direction = approach/avoid a situation
How does motivation affect behavior?
Motivations affects the selection, intensity, and persistence of an individual’s behavior
How is motivation related to performance?
Motivation is the psychological force that drives us to perform well
What is the most important type of motivation we have?
Intrinsic motivation
What is intrinsic motivation?
Internal process of motivation that comes from w/in oneself
What are the factors that affect intrinsic motivation?
- Perception of control
- Information
What is extrinsic motivation?
Motivation that comes from outside of us
What are the factors that affect extrinsic motivation?
- Recognition
- Rewards
- Endorsements, championships, $$$
How do rewards influence motivation?
- External reward systems reduce intrinsic motivation tied to an activity
- Increases external motivation
How does success influence motivation?
- Achievement provides another level of motivation for the next step
- Success is personally defined
Explain the Need Achievement Theory of Motivation.
- As humans, we have a drive to appear to have value to our community
- Motivation to achieve is a function of the relative strengths of the motive or tendency to approach success or avoid failure
Explain the Attribution Theory of Motivation.
- Task outcomes (O) in any achievement-related activity is a function of ability (A), effort (E), task difficulty (T), and luck (L).
- O = f (A,E,T,L)
