7. Blood disorders Flashcards
Why does angiogenesis occur?
trauma embolism neoplasia diabetes just growth regeneration of endometrium after menstruation
What does hypoxia stimulate? 2
EPO synthesis
Expression of genes for pro-angiogenic factors
How is VEGF expressed?
VHLp not oxidised
HIF-α & -β binding the dimer is translocated to the nucleus
binds to the enhancer region of the VEGF gene
What is the immediate stimulus for arteriogenesis?
mechanical - increased shear stress on the endothelial lining
What is aplastic anaemia?
too few RBCs
What is iron deficiency anaemia?
Hb defect
What is pernicious anaemia?
B12 defect
What is anaemia in leukaemia due to?
failure of erythropoiesis: malignant cells displace the erythroid precursors from their bone marrow niche
Two important leukopenias and why?
- neutropenia - can lead to infection susceptibility
2. thrombocytopenia - leads to bleeding
