What is détente?
After the Cuban Missile crisis there was a move to improve relations which became known as détente
What was the conflict going on in the Middle East?
- Israeli had a victory in the Six day war of 1967
- Arab states were drawn more closely to the SU as Israel was supplied by USA

- USA could not defeat the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong (used to describe Vietnamese communists)

- No restriction on MIRVs (multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles)
