6A - Neuroplasticity 🧠Flashcards
What is neuroplasticity?
The ability of neural connections in the brain to change as a result of experience due to interactions with our environment.
Define synaptogenesis
The process of forming new synapses
What is long term potentiation?
The relatively permanent strengthening of synaptic connections as a result of repeated activation.
What is long-term depression?
The relatively permanent weakening of synaptic connections as a result of repeated low activation level.
What is synaptic pruning?
When synaptic connections weaken overtime they undergo elimination through synaptic pruning
What is rerouting?
When healthy nearby neurons create alternative neural pathways when existing connections are lost through injury.
What is sprouting?
When existing neurons form new axon terminals and dendrites to allow new connections to be made.
What is mental stimulation?
Any activity that enriches the mind
Why is diet important for brain functioning?
the brain consumes high percentages of the total energy derived from nutrients to support the processes involved in neurotransmission
define neurodegenerative disease
an incurable condition that involves the progressive death of neurons
why is physical activity important for the brain?
it promotes neuroplasticity in the hippocampus which is essential for learning and memory
